So I came up with a quick step by step formula on how to do it. First of all, the necessities:
If you want to have your own website, you’ll want to get a domain name for yourself. A domain name is your address on the web. For example “EzineArticles.com” is a domain name, “whitehouse.gov” is a domain name and “eBay.com” is a domain name.
There are several Domain Registration companies out there to choose from and any one will do just fine. I always recommend GoDaddy.com, because they have some of the lowest prices for domain registration out there.
Domain names range anywhere from a couple of dollars to around $15 per year. If you pay any more for registering a domain name, you are getting ripped off! Anyway, the cost will change based on what extension you get (“.com”, “.org”, “.biz”, etc.).
For companies, you might look at getting your company name (“JoesPancakeHouse.com”) as your domain name. If this is a personal site, you could use your name (“FreddyJones.com”). If you are a non-profit organization, you might want to get a “.org” extension for your domain name. The possibilities really are endless!
The next necessity as far as having your own website would be a hosting account. Your domain name might be the address, but you can think of your web hosting account as your property lot where you can build a house.
Again, there are several web hosting accounts to choose from. Here are a few things to think about when choosing a web hosting company:
There are many other features to hosting accounts, such as Sub-Domains, Email Accounts, Databases and other things, but if you make sure that the above list is in place, everything else will be there as well. My pick for web hosting goes to HostMonsterWeb.com. I’ve been using them for a long time. They are trustworthy and reliable.
Once you have your Domain Name and Hosting account, you’re ready to build a site. There are a couple of ways to do this.
Go get a program like Dreamweaver or Nvu and design your own site, page by page. This is very tedious and will take a lot of time. And if you have no design skills, it will look awful (no offense)!
The good news is you don’t have to do all that.
If your hosting account has “Cpanel”, then you will have access to a system called “Fantastico” or “Simple Scripts”. There are several free web systems that can be installed for free. Here are a few that I recommend:
There are many other scripts that you can use as well, but these are the only 2 that I would recommend.
Designing your site is easy as well. If you have no design skills, using Joomla and WordPress can be a life-saver (and a money saver). No need to hire a professional to design a template for you from scratch. You can search through thousands of templates online. Some are completely free and others might cost you a little, but no where near what you would pay for a professional designer.
